Peter Chang’s China Grill for Lunch

Mas To Millers offers up a glowing review of lunch at China Grill.

The food was gorgeous and delicious. I still dream about the eggplant appetizer. It was a huge plate of fried eggplant spears, each one dusted with the perfect amount of salt and chili and mouth-numbing Sichuan pepper. The combination of salt and spice paired perfectly with the combination of a crispy outside and a tender center that melted in your mouth.

What Makes Peter Chang So Special?

The Fluvanna Review serves up a great review of China Grill… and the phenomenon of Peter Chang himself.

Today’s column is as much about Peter Chang as it is about his new restaurant in Charlottesville. Peter Chang, owner and chef of Peter Chang China Grill, is quite famous or maybe some would say infamous. The reasons for his fame are two-fold, his amazing Chinese cuisine and the fact that he opens and leaves restaurants as often as some people go food shopping. And then there are the Changians, foodie fans of Peter Chang who continue to follow his journey from DC, Northern VA, Tennessee, Atlanta and Charlottesville on blogs and twitter in order to dine in his latest restaurant venture.

The Triumphant Return of Peter Chang

A wonderful review from The Virginia Law Weekly:

The meal portions are large and lend themselves to family-style dining, which should give any diner an excellent opportunity to sample more than a few dishes from the menu. We started with Dry Fried Eggplant, which was incredible — crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and full of flavor. However, for most of the group this was our first understanding as to what the “spicy” indication on the menu really meant. The eggplant was made with ma or “the white pepper,” a pepper common in Szchewan food so spicy that it actually causes a numbing sensation when eaten in anything more than a tiny amount. Because of its intensity, it isn’t typically found in Americanized Chinese food — another indication that Chang’s is a step above your typical Chinese food place.

“A Fine Time Overindulging”

After several reviews of China Grill railing against both slow service and bad food, this diner gives high marks to both:

Food came to the table quickly, and it was delightful. Oh yes, the eggplant was spicy, as was the fish. I liked the spiciness a lot more than Pat did, but she was going back for more and following bites with lots of rice to absorb the spices. The bean curd had complex flavors, but I could still taste the individual onion, bok choi, and such in it. I had a fine time over-indulging.

Peter Chang’s China Grill on Yelp

Peter Chang’s China Grill has been added to Yelp.

As of the writing of this post, there are only two reviews. Both give 2 of 5 stars and complain about long waits and rude service. The long waits can (hopefully) be attributed to big crowds on the first public night, but let’s hope the service improves!

Richmond Magazine Reviews China Grill Grand Opening

Richmond Magazine’s Matt Sadler was at the China Grill grand opening, and reviewed the 16(!) course meal:

The menu for the evening was quite overwhelming. Sixteen dishes were served during a 2 1/2-hour time period. Each dish was a Szechuan specialty that Chang has offered in his brief stops along the East Coast. Each dish served was special in its own distinct way, but the following were most memorable:
